Maureen and I have been friends for twenty years and I remember the day we met like it was yesterday. I was seven years old and my family was invited to her house for a BBQ. I walked into Maureen’s room to find her sorting piles of beads by color; her entire floor was covered in sparkly beads and it was the most beautiful sight I had ever seen. She was sorting beads so she could easily find what she was looking for when making jewelry, which was a brilliant idea and quite the sight to see. It was right then and there that I knew we would be life long friends. Maureen and I both had a mutual interest in making jewelry and I learned quickly that we loved all types of crafting – painting, scrapbooking, and everything else in between.

“I love the colors involved and I love the dimensions. Crafting gives you all the tools to be able to make something really artistic.”    - Maureen

Our afternoons of crafting together evolved into a community of women who enjoy making hand-made projects. Through word of mouth and friends-of-friends, the group has formed and we come together as often as possible to craft and spend time laughing and sharing stories. One of the reasons this community has evolved is the common interest between the members. Each person in the group has a passion for expressing their creativity through different craft projects and has a different talent. Some members are expert sewers; some make jewelry and some just come to socialize!

Bay Area Craft Activities

Over the years we took frequent trips to the local craft store and even took how-to-scrapbooking classes. We scrapbooked our trip to Hawaii with pictures and stickers to colorfully describe what we called our “surfer’s diet,” which consisted of lemon bars and Starbucks Frappuccino’s. Years later, before Maureen’s wedding we spent time making escort cards and table numbers that combined stamping, calligraphy and hot wax seals. Crafting these items was a wedding cost saver but more importantly a fun wedding touch and allowed us to spend time together. My favorite part of our crafting dates are sharing stories, laughing and reminiscing about the fun times. Crafting has become more than just making something beautiful, it is a time to have fun and create new memories.

Susan can sew well and made the curtains in her apartment. She has an incredible talent, an eye for detail and has volunteered to teach the crafternooners how to sew. It is a very collaborative environment where crafters enjoy teaching and learning from each other.

Katie is a founding member of the crafternoon community and is also an incredible chef. She throws monthly dinner parties and often hand-makes table place setting cards and menus as an added personal touch. Katie expressed that she loves crafting, “because it’s a great way to be creative and use your hands, make pretty things and hang out with friends!” In high school Katie spent her free time sewing gorgeous purses and making Halloween costumes from scratch. She is one of my oldest friends and the only one who loves her embossing gun as much as I do.

“I love crafting because it's  a great way to spend time with my frineds and learn something new.”    - Susan

The crafternoon community comes together on a regular basis to share knowledge and help one another learn something new. This is a very unique community of individuals who love spending time together and making creative ideas come to life in the form of crafts! If you would like more information on when and where this community meets in San Francisco please contact me directly.
