THE STATISTICS
Social Identity THEORY

"Fact, it’s now estimated that at the current rate of change, it will take until 2085 for women to reach parity with men in leadership positions."

Communication theory can be used to support the positive impact the advertising industry is attempting to make towards the empowerment of women in society and within organizations. Who and what to know regarding the social identity theory?

>   Henri Tajfel & John Turner introduced the social identity theory (SIT) in the 1970's & 1980's.

>   The theory introduced the concept of social identity as a way to explain inter-group behavior.

>   The SIT suggests that individuals prefer to use social organizations or groups to communicate through, rather than by expressing their opinions individually.

There has been considerable progress made in women's professional advancement in the United States. The Center for American Progress reports the following:

>   In 1990, there were no women in the top executive ranks of the Fortune 100; by 2001,

11 percent of those corporate leaders were women.

>   From 1997 to 2009, women's share of top executive positions increased by 86%. The share of companies with female CEO's increased more than six-fold

>   In recent years (2014), the percentage of women in top management positions and on corporate boards has stalled.

>  We have work to do to increase the rate of change reach gender equality.
